In 2018, some local wrestlers and coaches worked with Monmouth University’s student organizations to start a wrestling club. The club had a great start and was supported by NCAA All-American and Triumph Wrestling Club owner Nick Roy among others. With firm support, the club began gaining momentum by assembling a solid group of wrestlers before ceasing operations due to the pandemic.
However, in 2022 the club restarted operations and the fire for wrestling at Monmouth University reignited! The club’s goals remained the same as when it was founded: to provide an opportunity for students to get in great shape through wrestling conditioning, to learn the sport of amateur wrestling, and to compete in both individual tournaments and team matches.
In 2024, the club was featured in the university’s Monmouth Magazine. The article talked about the tremendous success achieved during the 2023 – 2024 season including both John Dooley and Luke Petaccia representing the club at the NCWA national tournament in Louisiana.
Supporting the club at its restart was an all-volunteer coaching staff including Rich Famularo, Jake Benner, and Mike Verrochi. In addition, the club was supported by its advisor Maureen Slendorn who was followed by Rosaly Rivera. The club’s current Faculty Advisor is Joe Palazzolo.
